The last executions of Franco's dictatorship: 50 years on. Facts. Testimonies. Memory.

HISTAGRA co-organises the conference The last executions of the Franco dictatorship: 50 years. Facts. Testimonies. Memory

Saturday, 27 September marks the 50th anniversary of the last executions of the Franco regime. For this reason, the HISTAGRA Group and the commission for the Celebration of 50 Years of Freedom in Spain are organising a conference entitled: The Last Executions of the Franco Dictatorship: 50 Years. Facts. Testimonies. Memory, a meeting between various specialists that will take place in the University Auditorium at 5:00 p.m. and the screening of two films at the NUMAX cinema.

On 27 September 1975, just two months before the death of dictator Francisco Franco, five FRAP and ETA militants, convicted in summary court-martials, were shot in Hoyo de Manzanares (Madrid), Barcelona and Burgos. They were José Humberto Baena, José Luis Sánchez Bravo and Ramón García Sanz (members of the FRAP) and Jon Paredes Manot ‘Txiki’ and Ángel Otaegui (members of the political-military ETA), whose deaths provoked strong international condemnation and highlighted the isolation of the regime in its final days. Among those executed were two Galicians, both from Vigo: José Luis Sánchez Bravo and José Humberto Baena, who was a student of Philosophy and Arts at the USC.

The event begins at 5 p.m. in the USC Auditorium with a round table discussion featuring lawyer Magda Oranich, lawyer and journalist, defender of Jon Paredes ‘Txiki’, one of those shot; historian Ismael Saz, professor of Contemporary History at the University of Valencia; and El País journalist Jesús Rodríguez. The session will be moderated by Carmina Gustrán, commissioner for the commemoration of 50 years of freedom in Spain. Starting at 7:00 p.m., the NUMAX cinema will host the second part of the programme, with the screening of two films that document those events and their historical context. First, Expediente (Manuel R. Coronado and Carlos Rodríguez, 1977), a short film that won an award at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 1977, will be shown. This will be followed by Septiembre del 75 (Adolfo Dufou, 2009), which focuses on the struggle of José Humberto Baena's family to vindicate his innocence and preserve his memory. The screenings will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
