Title: The historic center of Santiago de Compostela through its (ethno)graphic heritage: mapping, archiving and conservation of the city's traditional signage

Duration: One year

Amount: €10,000

Summary: This project seeks to study the emblematic traditional signage of the Compostela monumental area, which forms an iconographic universe with unique characteristics, coining the concept of (ethno)graphic heritage to refer to it and highlight its value as an identity element. In recent years we have been witnessing the emergence of initiatives and policies for the protection of historical graphic heritage, both inside and outside of Spain; however, there are currently no public records or awareness measures on the importance of these cultural assets in Santiago. With an interdisciplinary work methodology, we will approach the object of analysis as a phenomenon to be known on the other side of the aesthetic. The research plan will consist of the documentary contextualization of the graphic identity of Compostela and in the study compared to other cities, to then proceed to the digitization and cataloging of the traditional signage, mapping its concentration nuclei as places of memory of a past that is still present. more threatened in the future. The ultimate goal will be to invite neighbors to rediscover their heritage, make institutions aware of the importance of its conservation, encourage the recovery of this traditional signage among local businesses and encourage reflection on the need for a form of sustainable tourism, kinder to ours.
