Recordatorio: HISTAGRA Uncomfortable Pasts Cycle: Philipp Ther, Refugees in Europe since 1492

Conference of the HISTAGRA Cycle Uncomfortable Pasts: Philipp Ther

Next Friday, May 6, 2022 at 12 noon. In Hall 15 of the Faculty of History, the lecture by the professor of the University of Vienna, Philipp Ther, will take place.

 Refugees in Europe since 1492

His intervention revolves around refugees in Europe since the s. XV to the present, following the line of one of his last works: The Outsiders: Refugees in Europe since 1492

Ther will examine the main causes of mass flight, from religious intolerance and ethnic cleansing to political persecution and war. He will reflect on the dangers and traumas of flight and explain why refugees and asylum seekers were welcomed in some periods, such as during the Cold War, and why they are rejected in times like ours. He will also go beyond the refugees in the host countries, who almost always benefited from admitting them. Tracing the long routes of the refugees, he reconceptualizes Europe as a unit of geography and historiography. Finally, Ther also discusses the Trump administration's anti-refugee policy, explaining why it is un-American and bad for the country.
