HISTAGRA-CISPAC researcher and professor of Economic History, Bruno Esperante, has been accepted to be part of the Governance working group of the international nitrogen research network (iN-Net). This is a research network driven by the International Nitrogen Initative (INI) based at New York University (NYU). The network brings together experts from multiple fields and areas of expertise who have been studying various aspects of the nitrogen problem for years, in some cases decades. The goal of iN-Net is to serve as an international forum for defining a relevant environmental policy agenda that supports the UN goal of reducing global nitrogen losses by 2030.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential and crucial nutrient in the global food production system. However, its overproduction has become a serious environmental problem since the last third of the 20th century, especially through excess livestock slurry and application of synthetic fertilisers in agriculture. Other sources of emissions into the atmosphere are obtained through emissions from fossil fuel consumption. All this causes major environmental, human and animal health problems. Reducing, controlling or limiting N production is a necessary goal to restore and protect healthy living standards for the entire planet.

The iN-Net network is divided into 3 working groups (data, governance and climate) in line with three identified barriers related to the UN target of halving N waste by 2030.

Inconsistent and incomplete data to establish a baseline to measure progress.

Lack of effective governance options to implement National Action Plans.

Fragmented understanding of the links between nitrogen and climate action.

The working groups are made up of stakeholders, producers, researchers and policy makers with the aim to include multiple disciplines, covering diverse regions of the world to participate in telematic and face-to-face discussion sessions.
