HISTAGRA at the inauguration of the monument in Celanova as a Place of Memory. March 2025 

The next 23rd of March at 10:30 am will begin the recognition of Franco's victims in Celanova, with the presentation of the video of the exhumation of the grave of San Breixo made in 2022 and the inauguration of the milestones in the cemetery itself.

From the team of the Plan of Democratic memory of Galicia, the city council of Celanova and the Association of memory of Celanova, coordinate the acts of in memory of the prisoners of the prison of Celanova, which will begin in the room of the old refectory of the Mosteiro of Celanova that had been enabled as a prison in 1936 on 23 March from 10: 30 h where the documentary about the exhumation of San Breixo in 2022, made by Óscar Górriz and produced by the Plan de Memoria Democrática de Galicia, will be shown, followed by a visit to the cemetery of San Breixo for the inauguration of two milestones that mark this space as a Galician Place of Memory. This is a monolith designed by Uqui Permui that contains information about the work carried out during 2022 as well as those murdered, and another one promoted by the Democratic Memory Commission of Celanova with the support of the Plan of Memory in homage to those who died in the prison-monastery. These monuments accompany what we hope will be a route of memory to the one already inaugurated last December in Vilagarcía de Arousa.

In addition to the relatives of the prisoners, members of the Government of the Principality of Asturias, the State Attorney General's Office and the sub-delegation of the Government of Ourense, together with the authorities of Galicia, are expected to attend the event.

In 2022 the team of the Galician Democratic Memory Plan began the work of documentation, exhumation and identification of those killed in Celanova and buried in a mass grave in the parish cemetery of San Breixo. In 2023, we were able to conclude that the bodies found corresponded to the seven prisoners of Asturian origin who had been detained in the Mosteiro de Celanova and murdered in the town of Ourense.

In June of that year, we proceeded, together with the Celanova City Council and the Celanova Democratic Memory Commission, to hand over the remains of Abelardo Suárez de él Busto and Marcelino Fernández García to their relatives, and in February 2025 we handed over the remains of Baldomero Vigil-Escalera in Gijón.
